Defensive moves

Tactics for the side under pressure: the only move that meets a threat, counterattacks, saving draws and perpetual check. This is a tactics course with 8 lessons and 60 interactive exercises, suited to players rated around 1400 (club players). Every exercise is played on a real board with feedback after each move, there is nothing to install, and it is free.

Lessons in Defensive moves

  1. Counterattack – Sometimes the best defence is a bigger threat: a check or a capture that the opponent has to answer first.
  2. Perpetual check – When you are losing, checks that never end save the game: a draw by perpetual check.
  3. Saving the game – The position is difficult. Find the only move that holds the draw; every natural move loses.
  4. Only moves in defence – Your opponent threatens something serious. Find the one move that meets the threat and keeps your advantage; the natural moves throw it away.
  5. Counterattack, part 2 – Sometimes the best defence is a bigger threat: a check or a capture that the opponent has to answer first. More positions, a little harder.
  6. Only moves in defence, part 2 – Your opponent threatens something serious. Find the one move that meets the threat and keeps your advantage; the natural moves throw it away. More positions, a little harder.
  7. Perpetual check, part 2 – When you are losing, checks that never end save the game: a draw by perpetual check. More positions, a little harder.
  8. Saving the game, part 2 – The position is difficult. Find the only move that holds the draw; every natural move loses. More positions, a little harder.
