Lessons in Endgame 3: Pawn races and breakthroughs

  1. Pawn races – Both sides have a passed pawn: count who queens first, and whether the new queen stops the other pawn.
  2. The pawn breakthrough – Three pawns against three: a pawn sacrifice breaks through and one pawn queens.
  3. King and pawn: precise play – Harder king-and-pawn positions: count the moves, use the opposition and go round the enemy king.
  4. King and pawn against king and pawn – With one pawn each, every tempo counts: often a single king move wins.
  5. Rook mate technique – Longer rook mates: cut the king off, bring your king, and use a waiting move with the rook when needed.
  6. Pawn endings in practice – Pawn endings from games: count tempi, use the opposition, make a passed pawn.
