Grob Opening

Grob Opening is a chess opening with the ECO code A00. It goes 1. g4. White opens with 1. g4 (the Grob move). After 1 move it is Black to move. The lesson on the board explains every move of the line and lets you play it yourself; it is free.

About the Grob Opening

White starts with 1.g4, an offbeat and risky move. The idea is Bg2 pressing on b7 and d5, but it weakens White's kingside.

• After 1...d5 2.Bg2, White attacks d5 and may play c4.
• The g4 pawn can be attacked by ...Bxg4 or ...h5.
• White should not castle kingside too fast; the king can be exposed.
