Lessons in Endgame 1: Basic mates and running pawns
The queen mate – King and queen against king: the queen boxes the king in, your king comes close, and the queen mates on the edge.
Mate, don't stalemate – With a queen against a lone king, the danger is stalemate: always leave the king a move until you can mate.
The rook mate – King and rook against king: the kings face each other and the rook mates along the edge.
The ladder mate – Two rooks mate without the king: one rook cuts off a rank, the other checks on the next one.
The rule of the square – Draw a square from the pawn to the last rank. If the defending king cannot step into it, the pawn simply runs.
Catch the pawn – Defending against a runner: step into the square of the pawn at once.
Endgame tactics – Few pieces, plenty of tricks: mates, forks and promotions in the endgame.
