Réti: 2...d4 Advance is variation 1 of 6 in the Réti Opening and King's Indian Attack course, a intermediate opening course for White (ECO A09). It runs 23 moves and begins 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 d4 3. e3 c5 4. exd4 cxd4 …. Black grabs space with ...d4. White answers with e3 and exd4, then plays a reversed Benoni with the queenside majority, Na3-c2 and the b4 break. In the lesson every move is explained on a board and then drilled; it is free.
Move by move
1. Nf3 – Develops, controls e5 and d4, and keeps all of White's plans open.
1... d5 – Black takes the centre with the d-pawn.
2. c4 – The Réti: attacks d5 from the side without putting a pawn on d4.
2... d4 – Black advances, gaining space and cramping White's b1 knight.
3. e3 – Challenges the d4 pawn at once, before Black can support it with ...c5 and ...e5 comfortably.
3... c5 – Supports d4 with a pawn, like a Benoni with colours reversed.
4. exd4 – Exchanges so White's d-pawn will face Black's d4 pawn and the e-file opens.
4... cxd4 – Recaptures, keeping a pawn on d4 that cramps White.
5. d3 – Stops ...d3 ideas, controls e4 and c4 and opens the c1 bishop.
5... Nc6 – Develops and supports d4 and e5.
6. g3 – Prepares Bg2, where the bishop works against b7 and supports the queenside play.
6... e5 – Builds a big pawn centre on d4 and e5.
7. Bg2 – Completes the fianchetto; the bishop attacks along the long diagonal.
7... Bd6 – Develops and defends e5, while aiming at White's kingside.
8. O-O – Castles to safety before starting queenside play.
8... Nge7 – Develops behind the f-pawn so ...f5 or ...f6 can follow.
The lesson goes on for 7 more moves, each with its explanation.
