Move by move

1... d6 – The Pirc: Black prepares ...Nf6 without allowing e5 to gain time on it right away.
2. d4 – White builds the classical two-pawn centre.
2... Nf6 – Black develops and attacks e4.
3. Nc3 – White defends e4 with the knight.
3... g6 – Black prepares the fianchetto ...Bg7, which will press against d4.
4. f4 – The Austrian Attack: White builds a huge centre with three pawns and prepares e5.
4... Bg7 – Black completes the fianchetto and prepares to castle.
5. Nf3 – White develops and supports e5.
5... O-O – Black castles quickly, so that the king is safe before White's pawns advance.
6. Bd3 – White develops the bishop to a natural attacking diagonal.
6... Na6 – The knight supports ...c5 and can go to b4 or c7. On a6 it does not block the c-pawn.
7. O-O – White castles kingside.
7... c5 – The thematic break: Black challenges d4 now that the knight on a6 supports c5.
8. d5 – White gains space and closes the centre, keeping the f-pawn ready for f5.
8... Nc7 – The knight reroutes to c7, supporting ...b5 and ...e6, and covering e6 and b5.
The lesson goes on for 4 more moves, each with its explanation.
