Pawn structure and plans

Pawns cannot move back, so every pawn move shapes the rest of the game. Learn the isolated, doubled and passed pawn, open files for your rooks, and how to choose a plan that fits the pawns. This is a strategy course with 2 lessons and 7 interactive exercises, suited to players rated around 1100 (improving players). Every exercise is played on a real board with feedback after each move, there is nothing to install, and it is free.

Lessons in Pawn structure and plans

  1. Isolated and doubled pawns – Some pawns need help from your pieces, and some squares become homes for enemy pieces. Learn to spot both.
  2. Passed pawns, open files and plans – A passed pawn wants to run, and a rook wants an open file. Let the pawns tell you the plan.
