The pawn is lesson 6 of 6 in How the pieces move, a basics course suited to players rated around 150 (complete beginners). Pawns are small but brave: they only go forward. It has 3 interactive exercises: 3 star-collecting exercises. You play every move on a board and get feedback straight away. The lesson is free.
What this lesson explains
A pawn moves straight forward one square. On its very first move it may go two squares instead. Pawns never move backwards.
Pawns capture differently than they move: one square diagonally forward. This pawn could capture either black pawn.
What you practise
Move the pawn two squares in one move.
Capture the black pawn with your pawn.
March the pawn all the way to the other side. When it arrives, it turns into a queen (you will learn more about this later).
