Lessons in Endgame 9: Queen against rook, rook against minor piece

  1. Queen against rook – The queen wins against a rook, but the technique needs exact moves: forks and zugzwang.
  2. Queen against rook: mating – The queen beats a lone rook: checks that fork king and rook, or a mating net on the edge.
  3. Rook against knight: split them – A knight far from its king can be cut off or trapped, and then the rook wins.
  4. Rook against knight: stay together – Keep the knight next to your king and rook against knight is a draw.
  5. Rook against bishop – Rook against bishop is usually a draw: the defending king goes to the corner the bishop does not control.
  6. Endgame defence – Find the only moves that hold the draw.
