Lessons in Endgame 5: Queen endings

  1. Queen against pawn – Against a pawn on the 7th, the queen comes closer with checks until the king must block its own pawn; then your king approaches.
  2. Queen against pawn: stalemate defence – With a rook's or bishop's pawn on the 7th, the defender has stalemate tricks and the queen often cannot win.
  3. Queen mate technique – Mate as fast as possible with king and queen: shrink the box, bring the king, no stalemate.
  4. Queen against queen – In queen endings one check can decide: look for skewers that win the enemy queen, or a mating net.
  5. Queens in the endgame – Queens in the endgame: checks, skewers and promotion races.
  6. Pawn endings in practice – Pawn endings from games: count tempi, use the opposition, make a passed pawn.
