Lessons in Endgame 2: King and pawn
The opposition – Kings face to face with one square between them: whoever does not have to move holds the opposition, and the other king must give way.
Key squares – Every pawn has key squares in front of it: if your king reaches one, the pawn queens. Lead with the king.
Defending with the opposition – The defender uses the same weapon: stay in front of the pawn, keep the opposition, and the attacker cannot get through.
The rook's pawn – A pawn on the a- or h-file cannot win if the defending king reaches the corner: there is no room to go round.
Endgame tactics – Few pieces, plenty of tricks: mates, forks and promotions in the endgame.
Pawn endings in practice – Pawn endings from games: count tempi, use the opposition, make a passed pawn.
