Checkmate patterns practice

A graded practice set of five mating patterns you will meet again and again. The back rank, the supported queen and the smothered king. Two mates with a rook and a knight. First in one move, then in two. This is a checkmate course with 2 lessons and 8 interactive exercises, suited to players rated around 700 (beginners). Every exercise is played on a real board with feedback after each move, there is nothing to install, and it is free.

Lessons in Checkmate patterns practice

  1. Mate in one: the patterns – Strong players do not work out every mate from scratch. They know the shapes. Learn five of them here.
  2. Mate in two – Now the same patterns, one move deeper. Look at checks first, then captures. A queen sacrifice is a good move if mate follows.
