Quick practice: forks, pins and skewers

The three tactics that win most games below 1200: attack two things at once, freeze a piece in front of a bigger one, and force a big piece to step aside. This is a tactics course with 3 lessons and 7 interactive exercises, suited to players rated around 750 (beginners). Every exercise is played on a real board with feedback after each move, there is nothing to install, and it is free.

Lessons in Quick practice: forks, pins and skewers

  1. Forks – A fork is one piece attacking two enemy pieces at once. Your opponent can only save one of them.
  2. Pins – A pin: a piece cannot move (or should not) because a more valuable piece stands behind it.
  3. Skewers – A skewer is a pin the other way round: the more valuable piece is in front. When it steps aside, you take what was behind it.
